Transnational and Temporary is a research project conducted by Professor Ruth Fincher, Professor Paul Carter, Associate Professor Paolo Tombesi and Dr Kate Shaw investigating the question of how place-making—broadly defined as the practice of fostering community in place—might occur when the majority of people in that ‘community’ are transnational rather than local in their orientation, and temporary rather than permanent in their settlement.

The population of the City of Melbourne is 81,144, of which about 40,000, or nearly 50 percent, are students (primarily tertiary students, and primarily from overseas). Our study area — the northern fringe of central Melbourne, which is the location of the University of Melbourne and RMIT University — has a student resident population of well over 50 percent.
